A life-long keeper of journals, I wrote about the benefits of recording one’s life journey while visiting the beautiful mountain town of Arequipa, Peru. (see article link below) Since the pandemic, I have been looking inward a lot more, developing my creative side and using pen and journal almost as frequently as the laptop. I’ll be giving a journal writing workshop with the Grind writing group (Vancouver) over zoom October 30.
NOTE: THIS EVENT OCCURRED JUNE 8, 2021. SEE ABOVE POST, TO VIEW VIDEO OF THE EVENT.
Join us for an inspiring & informative live presentation on the history of the Dundarave Print Workshop, celebrating 50 years of art & community making. From humble beginnings in a garage in Dundarave to a celebrated institution that fosters acclaimed contemporary artists, discover the origins & stories of the Dundarave Print Workshop.
Leading us on this journey through time are acclaimed printmaker & multimedia artist Arnold Shives who was a member in the early days, celebrated printmaker Gloria Shaw who has been a long-time member, & award-winning writer & historian Janet Nicol.

Join author and art historian Janet Nicol for a discussion of her book On the Curve: The Life and Art of Sybil Andrews. She and the curator, Jenelle M. Pasiechnik will be discussing the major themes of her book and the current exhibition. Event time – Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 2pm PDT (one hour). Registration for this online ‘zoom’ event is now open at the Campbell River Art Gallery website. The talk is part of the CRAG exhibition (March 6 to May 1) and featuring Nicole Crouch, Karver Everson, Jake James, Kari Kristensen and Marni McMahan. Each of these BC artists have produced new work in response to Sybil Andrews’ biographical history, aesthetic style and artistic practice.
IN VANCOUVER copies of On the Curve: The Life and Art of Sybil Andrews are available at the People’s Co-op Bookstore (Commercial Drive), Upstart & Crow bookstore (Granville Island), UBC bookstore and the Silk Purse Art Gallery (West Vancouver). The book is sold out at Chapters/Indigo stores in the Lower Mainland but still available at outlets in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. You can order through most bookstores or directly at Caitlin Press publisher. Updated – November, 2021
On the Curve is also currently available at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria gift shop (Vancouver Island), along with other great reads about BC artists. (Dec/2021)
I’m emerging from ‘lock down.’ Expect musings about Sybil Andrews, a BC printmaker; how Covid is impacting BC workers; celebrating a Vancouver art institution; book reviews on women’s suffrage (“A Revolutionary Wave”) and a couple’s challenges with early onset Alzheimers (“Four Umbrellas”).
Guest Speaker Janet Nicol: “On the Curve: The Life and Art of Sybil Andrews”
FRIDAY OCT 11 | 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Join the Gallery Associates in the Spencer Mansion and enjoy a lively and informational talk with Janet Nicol about the life and art of British-Canadian artist Sybil Andrews. Known for her bold linocut prints, Sybil Andrews was a professional female artist during the late 20th century, a distinctly male-dominated world. She is now recognized as one of Canada’s most prominent artists of the time.
Inspired by the working-class community of Campbell River where she lived, her art is known for its honest depiction of ordinary people at work and play on Canada’s West Coast.
Books available for sale from the Gallery Shop.
Presented in collaboration with the Associates of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and Caitlin Press.
*Please note that there is limited space available.
